Summary of the American Revolution
The American Revolution wasn't just about taxes, it was so much more. The American Revolution was about the 13 colonies gaining independence from Great Britain and earning their rights back. While being under the ruling of Great Britain, the colonies got caught in a cycle called mercantilism where the colonies send the mother country goods for free or at a very low price. The mother country then sells it back to colonies as finished goods and at a very high price. The colonies then had to produce more raw materials to survive. They also had to start producing finished products through the colonization to survive and then during the American Revolution. The colonies also rebelled due to taxation without representation. They felt that if they were going to be taxed on everything and follow all of Britain laws then they should have direct representation in parliament. After all, the boycotting, fighting (Boston Massacre) and civil acts of disobedience (Boston Tea Party) America declared independence on July 4th, 1776. This was after fighting in Lexington and Concord and the 2nd Continental Congress. Many important battles lead up to America winning the American Revolution. The battle of Saratoga is the turning point of the American Revolution because it secures the French Alliance (with the help of Benjamin Franklin) which was vital to winning the American Revolution. Next came Valley Forge and at Valley Forge there were really bad conditions such as starvation, freezing to death, and a smallpox outbreak in a very condensed space. This was also a good time because due to the smallpox outbreak, we now have vaccines. During this time, Thomas Paine wrote “The Crisis” to help the soldiers get through this hard and discouraging winter. Then the Continental Congress met and drafted the Articles of Confederation which as trash but it got us through the war and helped us realize that the federal government does need some power. The British finally surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia. They trapped the British on a peninsula and French troops came in to stop them from retreating by water. This ended the American Revolution with the Treaty of Paris 1783. Without the french with their supplies, troops and support, Benjamin Franklin with his people skills, and George Washington with his great leadership, we could not have won this war.
